Who pays for the first date?
@ 2008-07-24 - 01:32:05I had a date last night.
Onc thing i just don't get about dating... is about this WHO pays WHAT business.
Went for a few drinks. He paid the first drinks, then I paid the second round.
Then he suggested to go for a meal.
We went for an italian.
The bill was about 30 pound altogether.
Then we got the bill.
So in this situation, WHO should pay the bill?
I always thought that the guy should pay the first meal.
He asked me out, he suggested meal.
So i thought he'd offer to pay.
Obviously I've been polite and suggested to share the bill.
THEN!! He quite happily accepted that offer and we paid 15 each.
Now it turned me off... Not that I don't wanna pay for 15 quid. It's nothing. But the fact that my "date" is not prepared to pay for the meal at first date made me feel like shit. I felt like cheap and almost humilated.
I am happy to pay for the 2nd meal so we'll be even out, but just i wanted a guy to pay for the meal on the first date.
Or am I totally wrong feeling this way? Is it quite normal in this country to go dutch on the first date?? Or i should've offered to pay the full?
Anyway, he texted me saying he really enjoyed etc, and asked me out again for this sunday. He suggested to go to movie and dinner... So we'd go dutch again, i guess...??
I just don't get it. I feel really embarrassed spliting the bill in the restaurant. Feel like teenager-ish. I'd rather just pick it up the bill myself. Maybe that's what I would do...
P.S. still walking to the work!

i always believed guys should pay for the first date- its just an act of old fashioned chivalry, especially if he suggested it. After all your on HIS date. You were perfectly right to offer to pay, but he really should have forked out for you.
But...times are changing. Door holding and top hat tipping are less frequent now

Maybe some guys who are used to there only being one date find themselves paying all the time. Or maybe he was testing you to see how you would react? It has got you wrong-footed and thinking about how he may not be a predictable chap. Interestingly, he has now contacted you for another date, you don't know quite how to react and so it can't have been that bad a thing to have done.

Guys normally pay first date, but dont go mad becuase he wanted to go 50%, maybe he aint got much money.
Daating is so cliche. I hate that word, and infact that activity.
